Staffing
From the start of this term, we have farewelled Oli Friedmann and Jarrod Maxwell while welcoming the return of Tegan Burness from family leave. Alex Mendez has also taken leave from the ICT Technician role for the remainder of the year, and we are again fortunate to be able to call on Ben Adams to step in and support staff and students with ICT management. Britt Nolan has finished her time as a relief teacher and this term we are fortunate to be able to call on former teacher, Mary McLeish, to step in to classes when teachers are absent.
Parent Teacher Interviews and Student led conferences
The school has set aside Tuesday September 2 from 5:00pm until 7:30pm to conduct student led conferences for Year 7-9 students and Parent Teacher Interviews for Year 10-12 students which will be held in the school gym. Parents of students in Year 10 – 12 are invited to make appointment times on Compass to meet with teachers to discuss progress throughout the school year. Appointments will be for 10 minutes with each teacher, and it is strongly encouraged that students are in attendance for the discussion. Please book two appointments if a teacher has two of your children.
Parents of students in Year 7 – 9 are invited to attend student led conferences during the same times and we ask you to also make a booking via Compass to see the teachers of your child. Students will collect a reflection on their work from each class and discuss this with their teachers during interviews. We also ask parents to take the time to set goals for the remainder of the year to help students stay motivated to achieve in their learning.
Please try to set aside some time on this day to discuss the progress of your children. A note will be sent directly to you via Compass when bookings open about two weeks prior to the event.
Parent Survey
Each year the NT Department of Education asks parents to complete a short survey to give feedback to schools about the experience of students and parents in each community. Schools recognise that there is always room for improvement in the way they operate so finding out directly from community members is the best way to try to plan for enhanced performance which will ultimately benefit students. Please try to take a few minutes to log in to 2025 Parent Survey - Nhulunbuy High School and complete this year's survey. It is entirely anonymous so the school only receives aggregated results and can't identify individual respondents. Another note has been sent via Compass to encourage families to contribute. Students and staff also complete surveys so that we are gathering the opinions of all stakeholders.
House Sports Shirts
This week, students were given their new House uniform shirts which were ordered earlier in the year. They look great and many staff and students are keen to start wearing them at school. The main purpose for designing and purchasing these shirts was to identify students during House carnivals and build the team spirit for each of the Houses. To give students the chance to wear them more often, students will be encouraged to wear their House shirt on the days they have Physical Education lessons. The days will vary for each year level but will give the chance for the shirt to be worn a couple of days each week in place of their normal uniform shirt. If your child did not order a shirt last time and would now like to, there will be another opportunity over the next few weeks. Details will be sent separately via Compass.
026 preparation
We are starting to plan aspects of next year’s program including subjects for senior students and class structures for middle school students. To help with this task, we ask that if you know your children will not be at school next year to let us know as soon as you can. Similarly, if you know people who are moving to town next year but have not yet enrolled, please encourage them to get in touch with us as soon as possible. This information will be treated as confidential. It seems early in the year to be asking for this but it will be important to us being able to recruit staff to specialist roles, if needed, if we can be advertising before the end of this term.
Garma Festival
The 2026 Garma Festival program saw many students from NHS attend the education component on the Friday. Students attended on an expression of interest basis and gained a lot from the many different stalls and presentations that they saw throughout the day. We will continue to seek other opportunities for students to build their understanding of the culture and traditions of East Arnhem.
Year 6-7 transition visits
In the coming weeks, we will welcome our 2026 Year 7 students to the school for three initial visits. During these times, they will have time to familiarise themselves with their new learning environment and meet some of the teachers they will have next year. They will have classes and activities around the school to enable them to mix with new peers and experience learning in some of the subjects they may not have done before. During Term 4, there will also be an information night for parents and a full day at school for students as part of the transition process.
Year 10 Work Experience
Students in Year 10 have been working through the processes of presenting themselves as potential employees through preparing resumes and cover letters as part of the Health & PE and EIF programs. Many students have placements for work experience for later this term while some are waiting for responses to applications for placements already submitted. If your son/daughter has questions in relation to their work experience placement, please contact Mr Jolley or Mrs Ewing.
Certificate 2 in Building & Construction
Year 10 and 11 students who have started the Certificate 2 in Building & Construction through CDU will continue with the next stages of the program in Week 6 from August 18-22 and in Week 8 from September 1-5. These will be the fourth and fifth weeks of the program and it is important that students are at school every day to ensure they can complete all the required modules to gain the certificate. This is an important qualification which equips students to be employable in a range of jobs and trades. The final week of the program will be held early in Term 4.
Quick reminders
- Please ensure that students who ride e-scooters or e-bikes are wearing helmets and get regular reminders from family members about riding safely
- Students must wear school uniform including enclosed shoes to school each day

Footwear Reminder – No Crocs, Slides or Thongs at School
A reminder to all students and families that crocs, slides, and thongs are not permitted as part of the Nhulunbuy High School uniform.
Appropriate, closed-in footwear is a requirement for both safety and participation in many of our learning areas. This includes:
- Science – where practical experiments involve chemicals, glassware, and equipment that pose risks to exposed feet.
- Woodwork and Metalwork – where students work with heavy tools and machinery.
- PE and Outdoor Activities – where proper footwear is essential for movement, safety, and injury prevention.
- Cooking – where spills, hot liquids, and sharp utensils make safe footwear non-negotiable.
Students wearing crocs, slides, or thongs will not be allowed to participate in these classes and will be referred to the Responsible Thinking Classroom (RTC). Parents may also be contacted to bring appropriate shoes to school.
We appreciate your support in ensuring our students stay safe, meet uniform expectations, and are fully able to participate in their learning.
Please help us by making sure students leave home in closed-in, safe, and suitable footwear each day.
If you are experiencing difficulties providing appropriate school shoes, please reach out to the school wellbeing team - we’re here to help. 😊

Middle School News

Students have already been busy this term with new units, fun learning activities and completely new subjects commencing for some classes. Over the next two weeks, students will be working on their first assessment task which will be due around the end of Week 6. It is important for students (and families) to be aware of assessment task deadlines that need to be met. Assessment dates, along with results and comment feedback can be viewed in Compass. If parents or guardians need assistance with setting up Compass, please call into the Front Office.
It has been wonderful to share student “Shout Outs” in assembly for great things being done or achieved by individuals at school and in our community. Many students are being recognised for consistently aligning their behaviour and effort with the School Values of Creativity, Pride and Respect. Additionally, many NHS students have represented East Arnhem Region in community sports and activities including tennis and dance. Well done to all students who are making the most of all opportunities presented to them both in and out of school.
We have been lucky enough to have had Interschool Cross Country, Garma excursion, Jeans for Genes Day, Science Camp to Melbourne and Croc and Snake Safety presentations already this term. Upcoming activities for Middle School students include Do it For Dolly Day, Core of Life Cultural Day, Year 6 orientation visits and Gymnastics NT. It is certainly a busy and rewarding learning environment for our students to be a part of.

senior school news

Term 3 has kicked off well in the Senior School with our students engaging in their studies as well as getting involved in exciting activities, such as the Garma Excursion and Jeans for Genes Day activities and fundraising. The Year 12s have been busy fundraising to support their formal, so keep an eye out for posters around the school advertising their sales. Don’t miss their Nacho lunch next week!
This is a big Term for all our seniors, but especially our 12’s as they work hard to finish off some crucial parts of their courses and prepare for those final assessment submissions. To support them throughout this term, we have been holding regular Thursday afternoon tutorials. All Year 12’s are encouraged to come along and get some extra help with finishing assessment tasks and understanding content.
Regular attendance is really important at this end of the year, so all of our seniors are encouraged to make that effort to come to school every day to stay on top of their learning and support a successful last half of the year.
Lastly, I’m really excited to be stepping into the role of Head of Senior School here at Nhulunbuy High School. After spending the past 12 months on maternity leave, it’s wonderful to be back in this school community. I have enjoyed getting to know the senior students better over the last couple of weeks and am excited to support them as they navigate this important stage of the year. If you have any questions or would like to touch base, please feel free to reach out by calling the school or via email (teganl.burness@education.nt.gov.au).

Garma Education Day - A Celebration of Culture and Learning
Students from Nhulunbuy High School recently had the privilege of attending Garma Education Day, an inspiring event that brought together language, culture, and hands-on learning.
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of engaging activities, including language lessons, storytelling, spear making, and weaving. These experiences provided a unique opportunity to learn from local knowledge holders and to connect with traditions that have been passed down for generations.
The event also featured a variety of expo stalls, offering free giveaways and showcasing organisations and initiatives from across East Arnhem Land.
It was wonderful to see our students immersing themselves in such a rich cultural experience, making personal connections with the strong history, traditions, and community spirit that make East Arnhem Land so special. Garma Education Day was not only a celebration of culture but also a reminder of the value of learning from and with our local community. The students should be very proud of how they represented Nhulunbuy High School with Creativity, Pride and Respect.

Maths News
Students in Mr Sykes’s Year 7/8 and 8A Maths classes have been taking their learning outside the classroom for a recent data collection activity.
The task involved measuring a wide variety of things in the school environment. Students could be seen with rulers measuring the length of sticks and leaves outside the classroom, using rulers and tape measures to find the heights of books and posters around Block 21, weighing stones from the garden, and timing themselves doing handstands, walking along set paths or completing maths quizzes. Afterwards, they organised their data into tables and presented their findings in histograms.
This activity was a fantastic demonstration of creative problem-solving. Students had to consider what data they could realistically collect in the time allowed, determine the best methods for collection, and navigate any issues that arose. This included challenges such as how to measure leaves that were longer than a classroom ruler, what to do when they ran out of new posters to measure, or how to account for classmates taking longer than expected to finish a times-tables quiz.
Throughout the activity, the students worked with focus and enthusiasm. Their excellent collaboration and positive attitudes were a credit to them and made the task a great success. Well done, everyone!

Students Fundraise for Melbourne Group Activity
Students attending the Deadly Science Pathways Program held a BBQ fundraiser lunch to raise money for a group activity during their trip to Melbourne. They worked together to plan, prepare, and run the event showing great teamwork, responsibility, and community spirit. The money raised will help fund a fun and memorable experience while they're in the city.
Deadly Science Pathways Camp – Melbourne Update!
The Deadly Science Pathways Program is off to an exciting and inspiring start in Melbourne!
Seven Indigenous students from Nhulunbuy High School, in Years 9 and 10, are attending the camp, representing their school and community with pride.
Although luggage was delayed in Cairns, students took it in their stride, and everything arrived safely the next day. Spirits remained high as the group launched into a week full of discovery and opportunity.
Monday was all about exploring the city. Students visited the State Library, Melbourne Central, Bourke Street Mall, and strolled along the Yarra River, before heading up the Eureka Tower for breathtaking views, a VR show, and the thrilling Edge experience. We were also had a special visit from former NHS teacher Mr Friedman and wished him well before he heads off on his exciting new adventure.
Tuesday marked the official start of the science program, beginning with a Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Perry. Students connected with around 30 peers from four states, toured cutting-edge labs at WEHI, and were inspired by powerful presentations from First Nations scientists and staff working in STEM. The day also included a visit to the University of Melbourne- Murrup Barak, where students explored future study options and the wide range of support available for First Nations students.
Our students have truly embraced the experience - curious, respectful, and full of energy. We’re incredibly proud of the way they’re representing their school and community. And we’re only two days in! Stay tuned for the next newsletter as we share more highlights from the rest of this incredible camp experience.

Middle School Art: Tim Burton-Inspired Illustrations
Middle school art students recently completed a creative illustration unit inspired by the distinctive world of Tim Burton — the acclaimed artist, illustrator, and director behind films such as Frankenweenie, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Corpse Bride.
Students explored Burton’s unique artistic style, focusing on his use of black and white tones, expressive textures, and exaggerated character features. After identifying the key characteristics of his work, students developed their own imaginative character portraits.
Using charcoal as their primary medium, they experimented with shadow, line, and contrast to capture mood and personality. To finish, each student created a textile border using sewing machines — adding a tactile and decorative frame to their final piece. The results are now on display in the art room, showcasing a hauntingly creative and skillful tribute to Tim Burton’s iconic style.

Maritime: Learning on the Water

Maritime Students Learning on the Water – and Reeling in Some Fun!
As part of the MAR10418 Certificate I in Maritime Operations course at Nhulunbuy High School, students have been making waves – both in their skills development and in the local waters! The program prioritises essential boat handling, navigation, and sea safety skills that prepare students for future pathways in maritime industries.
While the focus remains firmly on learning key operational competencies, students also get the chance to enjoy the unique environment they’re training in. Whether it’s charting a course, working as a team to manage the vessel, or learning how to respond in emergency situations, every session on the water provides hands-on experience that builds real confidence.
And yes – there’s the occasional chance to drop a line in and catch a fish or two along the way! These moments of fun help strengthen bonds between students and give them a deeper appreciation for the ocean environment that surrounds them.
The Maritime course continues to be a favourite at Nhulunbuy High School, combining practical learning, cultural relevance, and the kind of real-world experience that students will carry with them long after they leave the classroom.

dawurr news
After a well-deserved mid semester break, boarders have returned. It has been a busy start to the term with lots happening in and out of Dawurr.
The Dawurr Senior’s held their first meeting, planning various activities for the term ahead. Dawurr Miyalk enjoyed an early morning beach walk before school, to set them up for a great day of learning! They plan to do this each week with a different activity, including bike rides, beach and hill walks/runs etc and may even sneak in a hot chocolate occasionally. The new ‘Homework Hub’ has kicked off on Thursday afternoons, ensuring our students are keeping on top of their school tasks and assignments. Spear making at Latram was a real hit with the Dirramu. Football, Basketball, Soccer and Oz Tag have all kept the boarders busy after school hours, during the week and on weekends.
You may have noticed we’ve been busy fundraising for a few of our students to head to Darwin for the Regional Athletics Championships in Week 6. Thank you to everyone who has kindly donated for this special cause.
Dawurr boarders participated positively at the recent GARMA Festival, involving themselves with the various activities on offer, they also enjoyed listening and grooving to the live music on Saturday and Sunday night.
With pleasant cooler weather upon us and the roads being in good condition, it’s been nice for our students to get out on country and connecting with culture.”

Outdoor Education
At the end of Term 2, the Outdoor Ed class was lucky enough to go on an expedition to Latram for the night. This adventure included a 5km walk in and out, lots of games, bonding around the campfire and most importantly fun! Some of our experiences included a water volleyball championship, competitions proving our survival skills like shelter building, fire starting and an exciting game of Predator vs Prey – Link & Sam unsurprisingly emerging as victors. All in all, we had an afternoon of adventures, a night of memories and a camp full of fun.
Special thanks to Kyra & Mr. Walsh for making our camp possible and coming along for the long walk, spending the night with us.
Thank you to Miss Nunn & and her beautiful Big Boy who made the night for us all.

first RESPONDERS' day
Nhulunbuy High School Celebrates First Responders Day
On Wednesday 11 June, Nhulunbuy High School proudly hosted First Responders Day — a heartfelt event designed to honour and thank the incredible first responders who serve and protect our community.
The event brought together a wide range of local services including NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services, St John Ambulance, Australian Border Force, NTES and Gove District Hospital representatives. These professionals generously gave their time to speak with students, showcase their vehicles and equipment, and offer insights into the vital roles they play in keeping our region safe and supported.
The afternoon began with a BBQ lunch where students had the chance to mingle informally with our guests, ask questions, and explore the various displays set up on the school oval. The energy and enthusiasm from both students and staff made for an incredibly positive atmosphere.
The afternoon concluded with a special whole-school assembly in the gym, where we formally recognised each organisation and presented them with a small token of appreciation crafted by our students. It was a powerful reminder of the respect and gratitude our young people hold for those who work on the front lines.
We would like to sincerely thank all of the first responder teams who attended and helped make the day such a success. Your presence left a lasting impact on our students and highlighted the many career pathways and acts of service that help shape our community. Thank you for all that you do.
